HAIR LOSS

Are YOU Complaining of Hair Loss?

hairIn most cases excessive Hair Loss is a symptom!
Today, possible reasons for excessive Hair Loss [above 100 hairs per 24 hours] can be (in no particular order):

  • Insufficient exposure to sunlight, causing Vitamin D deficiency! Vitamin D deficiency is now commonly seen in people who leave home for office prior sunrise, travel in vehicles, public transport, stay all day indoors and get home well after dark. If weekends are also spent indoors, apart from hair loss a lack of Vitamin D can be the cause for several (future) health issues, especially for individuals with darker skin, who require more sunlight exposure for best possible health, according to genetic predisposition
  • Various bacterial or viral infections, severely affecting overall health
  • Stress, extreme professional demands, exam pressure
  • Chronic lack of sleep
  • Psychological problems, severe anxiety
  • Hormonal imbalance due to presence of excessive fatty tissue
  • Various hormonal imbalances, ie. Hypo-Thyroid, PCO
  • Hair tied too tightly, hair perms, hair bleaching, hair dye, hot water showers, hot air hair-blow-dry
  • Extreme diets, ‘crash’-diets (imbalanced nutrition)
  • Weight loss (>20% of body weight) without appropriate supplementation
  • Long-term hypo-caloric/low calorie Diets [<1600 calories] without appropriate supplementation
  • Rapid weight loss (>10% of body weight per month), i.e. bariatric surgery
  • Extreme long-term weight loss, i.e. more than 33% of body weight per year, even with apt supplementation
  • Hormonal changes due to loss of unhealthy fatty tissue (positive transition)
  • Post pregnancy hormonal changes, especially when combined with rapid weight loss
  • Severely imbalanced nutrition/poor nutrition, food choices
  • Aging, menopause
  • Various kinds of drugs/medicine
  • Rare endocrine disorders
  • Chemo Therapy
  • Dermatological disorders

How to Prevent, Minimize Hair Fall:

  • All above mentioned need to be taken into consideration!
  • Always follow sensible dietary guidelines
  • Omitting essential foods can play havoc with our entire body, including hair
  • Ensure regular exposure to sunlight!
  • Exercise for healthy blood circulation to improve hair follicle nutrition
  • Do not stress hair, i.e. applying chemicals, combing while wet, brushing excessively, tease and pull
  • Avoid Extreme diets, ‘crash’-diets, over-dieting, nutritionally imbalanced diets
  • Remember to appropriately supplement an induced weight reduction of more than 10% of body fat/weight (the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals may not be met entirely with a daily calorie intake below 1600 calories. Supplementation should not be excessive but according to weight loss). Please consult a suitable healthcare professional
  • Since anxiety is a contributory factor to hair loss, do not to constantly worry about your hair. It may make matters worse
  • Consult a suitable healthcare professional if excessive hair loss persists
