Catarrh, Phlegm, Wheezing

What has Nutrition & Lifestyle got to do with it?

Common causes for Catarrh, Phlegm, Wheezing
• Infections (cold, flu, sinusitis, bronchitis)
• Allergies (less tolerated foods/fluids, hayfever)
• Pollution (dust, smoke, cleaning chemicals, many other)
• GORD/acid reflux, due to stress and/or abdominal obesity

Helpful Nutrition Advice :

  • Drink approximately 1 litre of warm/hot water per 30 kg bodyweight. This can help mucus to be expelled
  • In South East Asia I have observed a distinct intolerance to dairy products, especially milk, flavoured milk, yoghurt, drinking yoghurt, dairy ice cream. Eliminate dairy, and observe
  • Excessive intake of sugar and ultra processed foods suppresses our immune system, the ability to fight external allergens. Reduce or minimise intake
  • For many, King Coconut Water, fruit juices cause increased phlegm/mucus production
  • If you carry excessive fatty tissue (especially abdominal), try to work towards improving Bodyweight via healthy, balanced nutrition with view to unhealthy fat loss

Helpful Lifestyle Advice:

  • Get sufficient Night Sleep. An erratic sleep pattern can impair our immune system and reduces the potential to heal
  • Engage in regular Cardio Exercise. Remember that frequency is more helpful than duration. Cardio exercises help expel mucus, as well as prevent stagnant mucus
  • Avoid excessive exposure to smoke, chemicals, irritants. Various types of pollution increase the symptoms and severity of subject
  • Minimise (chronic) stress. Continuous stress can cause a considerable increase of mucus

Please consider above mentioned carefully.
Catarrh, phlegm and wheezing are symptoms that can affect the quality of life and health of people who suffer from them. There are different causes and treatments depending on the underlying condition. It is important to consult a health care professional if these symptoms are persistent, severe, or interfere with daily activities.

ECZEMA-PSORIASIS

DIET AND LIFESTYLE GUIDANCE

Many may not know that the SKIN is our largest organ! It is important to protect us from bacteria and germs, to regulate our body temperature and to enable us to feel touch and other external influences. Our skin is very sensitive to all biological (internal/endocrine) and external changes, such as environment.

The skin is a mirror of our overall health and well-being.

ECZEMA or PSORIASIS can be caused by irritants of any kind, environmental factors, as well as unsuitable nutrition, lifestyle, excessive stress, which can lead to temporary or even chronic skin inflammation.

It is important, that the CAUSE is identified.

Although many affected seek relief via prescriptions, by ingesting and/or applying meds, it is often underestimated that Nutrition and Lifestyle play a major, if not an essential role in the management or even cure of eczema/psoriasis.

The treatment of eczema/psoriasis requires an ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET AND A LIFESTYLE SANS CHRONIC STRESS, CONSTANT WORRIES OR EVEN ANGER.

Try to avoid/minimize/limit:

  • Sugar and any sugar-like natural sweetening agents (i.e. fruit syrups, HFCS, fruits of high sugar content, including dried fruits), sugar laden and highly processed cereals
  • Fruit Juices (including no ‘sugar added’)
  • Sugar laden drinks/’soft’ drinks
  • Dairy: especially milk, milk powder, malted milk drinks, yoghurt. To a lesser extent clay-pot fermented curd and ripened cheese
  • Highly/ultra-processed foods/fluids, Fast Foods, foods containing many additives, preservatives
  • Red meats/fish, prawns, cuttle fish
  • Pineapple, mango
  • The use of house cleaning chemicals, as well as all chemicals used for body-care, especially hair dye, make-up, sprays, creams. Check detailed ingredients lists
  • Smoking/tobacco
  • Alcohol

Try to improve on the following which will increase Immune response, the chance of healing, and a possibility of cure:

  • Increase the intake of colourful vegetables, which contain plenty of anti-inflammatory phyto-chemicals and antioxidants
  • Regular exercise you may enjoy (cardio, not weights!) such es brisk walking, cycling, dancing. Swimming should be avoided due to the chlorine addition to pool water
  • Drink at least 1 litre of water per 30 kg bodyweight within 24 hours. This helps skin moisture replenishment and cell renewal
  • Keep your chronic stress levels at bay. Daily time pressure, constant demands, toxic relationships not only impair healing, but may cause further inflammation. Seek the help of close relatives, friends, a professional if you feel you cannot manage
  • Use anti-inflammatory herbs and spices in the preparation of foods/fluids: ginger, turmeric, coriander, cloves, cinnamon, cumin, curry leaves, lemon grass, garlic, green chili
  • Use less highly processed foods. Check out ingredients lists: the shorter the better
  • Chose predominantly natural foods, eat home prepared foods
  • If you carry too much of body-fat, try to reduce at least 10% – 20%, via a sensible, healthy weight reduction programme, to improve immune response
  • Check your blood glucose levels including HbA1c

By making positive nutrition and lifestyle choices symptoms of eczema/psoriasis can be minimized, possibly even cured.

BARIATRIC SURGERY / Gastric Bypass

An Option to Lose Weight, But No ‘Magic Wand’

I have always been chubby. Recently I was diagnosed with potentially serious health issues related to my excessive body weight. I have heard about gastric surgeries which lead me to believe an easy weight loss solution. Since I have never really followed a diet (because I love to eat), I am contemplating to undergo this surgery, which hopefully can help me lose weight without dieting. What is your opinion?
